Announcements for Sunday

March 6, 2005

The purpose of First Presbyterian Church

is to glorify God in Jesus Christ through

worship, evangelism, discipleship, fellowship and service.

Please continue to keep the following individuals and their families in your prayers:  Katherine Birdsong, Jane Eubanks, Norman Gardner, Charlie Mixon and Martha Jewell Mixon.

We welcome Jim Herring today representing Gideons.  If you would like to contribute to their work, Mr. Herring will be standing at the door with the Pastor to receive any offerings you might like to give.

Thank You

“I am deeply appreciative of the many prayers and acts of kindness shown to me during my recent eye surgery.  It is such a comfort to have my church family praying for me during this trying time.” Gloria Ormand.

Congratulations

The Men of the Church annual chili cook off was a huge success.  For all who took part we would like to say thank you.   They were all great however as you know there can only be one winner.  The winner was David Blount.  If you ever have a cold and need to be able to breathe, just have David make you some chili.  It is guaranteed to have you breathing again.  $200+ was raised and donated to Harbor House.

The following is the schedule for meetings the week of March 6 thru March 12.  Please note all meeting will be at the church unless otherwise indicated.

Jerry McDonald will provide our program.  He will discuss “Behind the Scenes at Indian Springs” Jerry is an Upson County native and a 1955 graduate of R. E. Lee.  He has become a local authority on the life and times of the lower Creek Indians who used to populate our section of Georgia.

Jerry is a retired computer consultant who mostly searches for artifacts left by the lower Creek Indians when they were forced to leave the state along with the Cherokees on the infamous Trail of Tears to Oklahoma reservations in the mid 1830’s.  He and his brother Tim share in these searches, and they now have a large collection of authentic Indian artifacts.  For dinner we will have spaghetti, green salad, garlic rolls, tea and cherry cheesecake. The cost is $5.00 per person. Children under 3 will eat free.  The cap per family is $15.00.   If you wish to attend, please complete the form at the bottom of this page and place it in the offering plate.   You may also call the church office by noon on Tuesday to place or change a reservation.

Upcoming Events

In the weeks leading up to Easter morning, Pastor Blevins will be preaching a sermon entitled In the Presence of Christ. This series will focus on the lives of some of the people who were in the presence of Christ during His last days.  The goal of the series is to get us to examine ourselves in the light of those who turned away from Christ during His time of passion, and consider if the negative things that caused them to turn away just might be in our lives too.  This should be a good series to help us grow in our faith and rise above our own inconsistencies, and help us stand in the presence of Christ as stronger Christians.  Why not plan to be present each Sunday until Easter, and invite someone who doesn’t have a church home to attend the series with you?

Maundy Thursday Services

Maundy Thursday Services will be held at our church on Thursday evening, March 24, at 7:00 p.m.  We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper during the service and remember His great sacrifice paid for our salvation.  Plan to attend this service of inspiration and invite a friend to come with you.

Easter Sunrise Services

The Upson County Ministerial Association is sponsoring the community Sunrise Services again this year on Easter Morning, at 7:00 a.m., at the Crystal Hill Cemetery.  We will cancel the 8:30 a.m. Worship Service at our church that morning.

Renewal Weekend

Renewal Weekend will be Saturday and Sunday, April 9th and 10th.  Our speaker will be Parker T. Williamson, Editor of the Presbyterian Layman and Chairman of the Presbyterian Lay Committee.

Our programs will begin with a BBQ Supper (Bobby Searcy catered) on Saturday evening at 6 PM (reservations required, donations accepted for the BBQ supper) followed at 6:30 PM by a program lead by Parker Williamson in the fellowship hall.  On Sunday morning Parker will present a program to the combined Sunday School classes at 9:30 AM, and will preach the sermon at the 11 AM Worship service.   Please note on this Sunday we will not have an our 8:30 morning worship service.
